Can you ship lithium-ion batteries?

Lithium-ion batteries are classified as dangerous goods and are therefore subject to specific shipping requirements.

Please check the information below before ordering or forwarding an item containing a lithium-ion battery. Shipments that do not meet the required conditions may be rejected, returned or disposed of by the shipping carrier.

Lithium-ion batteries inside or packed with equipment

Lithium-ion batteries may be shipped when they are installed in a device or packed together with the equipment they are intended for, provided the following requirements are met:

The total net weight of the battery must not exceed 5 kg
Each battery must have a capacity of no more than 100 Wh
Each individual cell must not exceed 20 Wh
A maximum of 3 batteries per piece of equipment is permitted

Lithium-ion batteries cannot be shipped using Deutsche Post or ShipGerman Economy.

Required battery marking

Certain shipments containing lithium-ion batteries require a dangerous goods label on the outside of the parcel.

A lithium battery marking is required when:

1. Batteries are packed together with equipment, or

2. The shipment contains at least 2 batteries or 4 cells

For example, this may apply if two smartphones are shipped in the same parcel.

If your shipment falls into one of these categories, please contact our customer service once the parcel has arrived at our warehouse.
We will arrange the required marking for the shipment.

There is no additional charge for applying the label.
Without the required marking, the carrier may refuse, return or dispose of the shipment.

How to calculate battery capacity

Battery capacity in watt-hours (Wh) can be calculated using:

Voltage (V) × Amp-hours (Ah) = Watt-hours (Wh)

For example:
A smartphone battery rated at:
5 V and 5,000 mAh.

First convert:
5,000 mAh = 5 Ah
Then calculate:
5 V × 5 Ah = 25 Wh

The battery therefore has a capacity of 25 Wh, which is below the permitted limit of 100 Wh.

Lithium-ion batteries without equipment

We cannot ship lithium-ion batteries on their own when they are not installed in or packed together with suitable equipment.

This also includes power banks.
